Fever Series re-reading | DARFEVER | Chapter 1

It’s funny how such a tiny insignificant, dozen-times-a-day action can become a line of demarcation.

The picking up of a phone. The pressing of an on button.

Before I pressed it—as far as I knew—my sister Alina was alive. At the moment of pressing, my life split into two distinct epochs: Before the call and After.

Before, I thought I knew everything. I thought I knew who I was, where I fit, and exactly what my future would bring.

After, I began to discover that I’d never really known anything at all.

ACCEPT ALINA’S DEATH? NEVER.

First, to Ronald Bilius Weasley. I leave my Deluminator, a device of my own making in the hope that, when things seem most dark, it will show him the light.

To Hermione Jean Granger. I leave my copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard in the hope that she find it entertaining and instructive.

To Harry James Potter. I leave the Snitch he caught in his first Quidditch match at Hogwarts as a reminder of the rewards of perseverance and skill.

Born to a former Empress and her guard, Elizabeth lies in a precarious political and social balance. She retains a title and a monthly pension from her mother’s family, but is mostly ignored by the press in favor of her richer and more scandalous cousins. As half-witch and half-shape shifter, she is considered by many to be dangerous, unstable, and a liability to everyone she comes in contact with. Those complaints diminished, at least vocally, after the rebellion began. In a press conference, Elizabeth, her twin brother, and eleven other noble children announced they would be enlisting in the royal army immediately. True to her word, Elizabeth is a lieutenant colonel and leads a small battalion with Colonel Robert Picard.

Highly intelligent and obsessive compulsive, Arista is the most troubled of her five siblings. She was born a werewolf and has the ability to compel one with her voice. She began stealing sips from her father’s liquor cabinet by age eleven and started smoking soon after. She was sent to the capitol at age thirteen with her sister to live with her maternal grandmother. She caused a scandal at seventeen when she had a daughter, Callie, and refused to publicly acknowledge a father. At eighteen, she was one of thirteen noble children to enlist in the royal army. A commandant, she presides over a company under Colonel Robert Picard. She can often be found chain smoking with Lieutenant Colonel E. Burton.
